A

Alarm:

An alarm is considered to be an audible sounding device, such as a motor vehicle's horn, bell, siren, or other sounding device, that can be heard at a distance of at least 300 feet for a minimum of 3 minutes.

Anti-Car Theft Act:

Act passed in 1992 to prevent and deter auto theft. Title II of the Act authorizes NMVTIS and is intended to address automobile title fraud. The NMVTIS Final Rule was published in the Federal Register on January 30, 2009.

Anti-hot Wiring Anti-theft Device:

A circuit or method that prevents a motor vehicle from starting, including ignition interrupts, starter interrupts, or fuel interrupts.

Anti-Theft Device:

Any device designed to reduce the chance of a vehicle being stolen, or aid in the recovery of a vehicle if it is stolen. Examples include car alarms, keyless entry, starter disablers, etc.

Anti-theft - Manual Alarm:

The driver must set a manual alarm.

Armed Robbery:

Robbery committed while the person accused is armed with a dangerous weapon.

Auto Shutoff And Reset Anti-theft Device:

A system by which an alarm device sounds for not more than 4 minutes, shuts off, and immediately rearms itself.

Immobilizer:

An immobilizer is an electronic device fitted to an automobile which prevents the engine from running unless the correct key (or other token) is present. This prevents the car from being "hot wired" after entry has been achieved.

The intentional taking of another person's property without legal permission. What constitutes legal permission varies from state to state. Whether it is grand larceny or petty larceny depends on the actual value of the property stolen.

A motion detector is a device that contains a physical mechanism or electronic sensor that quantifies motion that can be either integrated with or connected to other devices that alert the user of the presence of a moving object within the field of view. They form a vital component of comprehensive security systems, for both homes and businesses.

Theft:

Crimes of larceny. Larceny is the unlawful and intentional taking of another person's property with the intent to deprive that person of said property permanently. Larceny can be done by fraud, force or threat of force. In many states, the value of the property will dictate whether the crime will be charged as grand theft or petty theft.

Theft Of Motor Vehicles:

Theft of a motor vehicle includes the theft of all land vehicles with an engine that run on the road which are used to carry people (including cars, motor cycles, buses, lorries, construction and agricultural vehicles, etc.).

VIN:

Vehicle Identification Number; a unique number given to each motor vehicle for identification purposes.

Violent crime is defined as violence against the person (such as physical assault), robbery (stealing by force or by threat of force), and sexual offences (including rape and sexual assault).

Wheel Lock:

Wheel lock is a mechanism for firing a firearm. It was the next major development in firearms technology after the matchlock and the first self-igniting firearm. The mechanism is so-called because it uses a rotating steel wheel to provide ignition. Developed around AD 1500, it was used alongside the matchlock and was later superseded by the snaphance (1560s) and the flintlock (c. 1600).
